The Perspectives of Parents and the Perpetual Cycle of Debt
Among Filipino Households

What does Utang na Loob mean?

In our households, we use the words to define the feeling of indebtship to someone. Be it a favour, your time, your attention, or more evidently: money.

On the surface level, it's an everyday term used in everyday conversation. But the moment you start searching up the word on your online search engine of choice, you begin to realize it runs even further down the rabbit hole.

Not only does the term find its roots all the way to the early 1500s during the era of Spanish Colonization, you begin to even see research papers and documents that have findings that even claim that those feelings associated with Utang na Loob are only present within Filipinos and ASEAN adjacent households.

But what does that mean for us Filipinos? Explore our website and watch our films to get a deeper grasp of how Utang na Loob is affecting our daily lives. For the better, or for the worse.
